Prostate
Prostate cancer
For new diagnosis, active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, and ablative therapy treatment options. A urologist, and sometimes a radiation oncologist, reviews staging, risk category, and personal goals before any plan is chosen.
What patients are usually trying to decide
Patients are usually trying to understand whether symptoms, test results, or a new diagnosis require a urology visit.
A urologist may review PSA trend, urinary symptoms, prostate size, imaging, biopsy history, cancer risk, medications, and procedure fit.
Procedures and appointment paths
Surgery and monitoring
Robotic radical prostatectomy
A surgical prostate cancer treatment option that should be compared with surveillance, radiation, ablative, and other plans during specialist review.
Active surveillance
Monitoring low-risk prostate cancer with scheduled PSA testing, exams, imaging, and repeat biopsy when appropriate, instead of immediate treatment.
Ablative therapy
Focal therapy
A targeted treatment discussion for selected prostate cancer cases after careful staging and specialist review.
HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound)
An ablative approach that uses focused ultrasound energy to treat selected prostate tissue. Candidacy depends on staging, prostate characteristics, and specialist review.
Cryosurgery (cryotherapy)
An ablative approach that uses controlled freezing to treat selected prostate tissue, discussed for specific cases after staging and specialist review.
TULSA-PRO (MRI-guided ablation)
An MRI-guided transurethral ablation approach studied for treating selected prostate tissue. Candidacy and fit are reviewed with a specialist.
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy types
Radiation therapy is one category of prostate cancer treatment. It includes external beam approaches such as IMRT and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and internal brachytherapy seed implants. A radiation oncologist reviews staging, risk, and goals before any plan.
SpaceOAR hydrogel spacer
A hydrogel spacer placed between the prostate and rectum before prostate radiation to add space in that area. Whether a spacer is appropriate is discussed during radiation planning.
Barrigel rectal spacer
A hyaluronic-acid rectal spacer used in some prostate radiation plans to add space between the prostate and rectum. Suitability is reviewed during radiation planning.
BioProtect balloon spacer
A balloon-style rectal spacer that may be discussed as part of prostate radiation planning to add space between the prostate and rectum.
