What Is a Male Infertility & Sexual Medicine Specialist?

This is a urologist who has completed additional fellowship training (typically 1–2 years) in andrology, male reproductive medicine, and/or sexual medicine. These specialists are experts in male fertility problems, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie's disease, testosterone disorders, and penile prosthetic surgery. Fellowship training is associated with the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) and the American Society of Andrology.

What Conditions Does a Male Infertility & Sexual Medicine Specialist Treat?

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection
  • Peyronie's disease — curvature of the penis caused by scar tissue (plaque)
  • Low testosterone (hypogonadism) — fatigue, low sex drive, and other symptoms of low hormone levels
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Delayed ejaculation or inability to ejaculate
  • Painful ejaculation or blood in the semen
  • Priapism (a prolonged, painful erection that won't go down)
  • Male infertility — abnormal semen analysis, low sperm count, azoospermia (no sperm)
  • Varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum) associated with infertility or pain
  • Vasectomy and vasectomy reversal
  • Sperm retrieval for IVF (TESE, micro-TESE)
  • Fertility preservation before cancer treatment

What Procedures Does a Male Infertility & Sexual Medicine Specialist Perform?

These specialists perform penile prosthesis implantation (inflatable or semi-rigid), Peyronie's disease surgery (plication, plaque incision with grafting), Peyronie's injections (Xiaflex), intracavernosal injection therapy (trimix), priapism procedures (shunt surgery, corporal aspiration), microsurgical vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy), microsurgical varicocelectomy, testicular sperm extraction (TESE, micro-TESE), electroejaculation, vasectomy, and sperm cryopreservation coordination.

Who Should See a Male Infertility & Sexual Medicine Specialist?

Men experiencing erectile dysfunction, a curved penis, low testosterone symptoms, difficulty with ejaculation, or fertility problems should consider seeing this type of specialist. This is also the right specialist for men interested in vasectomy reversal, penile prosthesis surgery, or fertility preservation before cancer treatment.
